For Aubrey Fletcher, the mountains of Ouray County are more than a stunning backdrop; they’re home. As a local wedding and elopement photographer, Aubrey has built a thriving career helping couples create unforgettable memories against the breathtaking landscapes of the Western Slope. Her work, steeped in adventure and creativity, reflects her passion for storytelling and her love of the outdoors.

A Photographer Rooted in the Community

Aubrey’s journey to Ouray began in December 2018 when she and her family relocated to the area. Drawn by its natural beauty and outdoor opportunities, the mountains quickly became an integral part of her life and career. “We’re very outdoorsy people, and this lifestyle just fits,” Aubrey shares. “I love that my job allows me to explore these incredible places while helping couples celebrate their love.”

Beyond her photography, Aubrey is deeply tied to Ouray’s community. She works closely with local venues, planners, and other creatives to ensure couples have a seamless and memorable experience. Whether she’s scouting remote locations or advising on wedding details, her commitment to showcasing the region’s beauty strengthens her bond with the area and its people.

From Large Weddings to Intimate Elopements

Though she occasionally shoots larger weddings, Aubrey’s specialty lies in adventure elopements—intimate ceremonies that embrace the spirit of the mountains. “Adventure elopements are where my heart really lies,” she explains. “It’s about spending the day in a beautiful landscape, focusing on each other, and creating something truly unique.”

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Aubrey saw a shift toward smaller, more personalized ceremonies. “People began to realize they didn’t need a 300-person wedding to have something meaningful,” she says. Since then, she’s worked with couples who want to embrace the simplicity and connection of elopements while showcasing the breathtaking scenery of the San Juans.

A Day in the Life of an Adventure Photographer

Mountain weather can be unpredictable, but Aubrey embraces it as part of the adventure. From whiteout blizzards to summer thunderstorms, she adapts to the elements with creativity and enthusiasm. “Mountain weather adds so much character to the photos,” she says. “Your images will never look like anyone else’s.”

Her work often involves early mornings and remote trails. One of her favorite shoots began at 3 a.m. to catch the sunrise at Courthouse Mountain near Ridgway. “The lighting was perfect, the couple was amazing, and we created something unforgettable,” she recalls. It’s moments like these that remind Aubrey why she loves what she does.

Telling Stories Through Her Lens

Aubrey’s photography style is defined by true-to-color editing with earthy tones that highlight both the landscape and the couple. She describes her approach as “light and airy” while maintaining natural and timeless elements. “I like to bring down highlights and keep things balanced,” she shares. “My goal is to create images that feel authentic and showcase the beauty of the day.”

She also incorporates black-and-white photography, capturing emotion in a way that feels classic and enduring. “There’s something timeless about black-and-white images,” she says. “They strip away distractions and let the emotion shine through.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

As an established photographer, Aubrey also hopes to inspire those considering similar careers. Her advice? “Shoot everything at first, then figure out what you love most. Once you find your niche, embrace it wholeheartedly.” She credits her success to staying true to her vision and building relationships within the community. “Your work should reflect your passion. That’s what resonates with people,” she adds.

Looking to the Future

After six years in the industry, Aubrey continues to innovate and inspire. She’s excited to see Ouray’s wedding industry grow, with more venues catering to larger celebrations while still maintaining the area’s adventurous spirit. “I’m so grateful to be part of this community and to work with couples who want to celebrate their love in such a unique way,” she says.

For Aubrey Fletcher, photography is more than a job; it’s a calling. Her ability to combine artistry, adventure, and connection has made her a sought-after photographer in Ouray County and beyond. As she puts it, “I love what I do, and I feel so lucky to call this place home.”
